Local Hazard Mitigation Planning is receiving new attention, with recent legislation under the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 and 44 CFR parts 210 and 206, communities are now required to have a local Hazard Mitigation Plan completed by November 2004. Communities will risk losing HMGP funding without a community adopted and FEMA approved Local Hazard Mitigation Plan.

Nome is the second community in the nation to have completed their Local Hazard Mitigation Plan. The plan was adapted from their floodplain management plan and is a good sample of a medium size community plan. The Nome Plan and Local Mitigation Plan information is located on this web site.
